Canada: The Electoral Participation of Ethnocultural Communities
Immigrants and ethnocultural minorities are likely to constitute increasingly larger segments of the electorate in the 21st century. Many studies from Western European countries have shown that naturalized citizens vote at lower rates than the native-born and that eligible voters from some non-European cultural groups are less likely to vote than members of the majority cultural group. This study examines whether Canada’s foreign-born and non-European voters also experienced the same participation disadvantage in the 2000 and 2004 federal elections.

Elections Canada Voter Turnout Study by Age Group
The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada has a mandate to make the electoral process better known to Canadians, particularly to those who might experience difficulty in exercising their right to vote. This study is one of the initiatives aimed at better understanding the dynamics of electoral participation, chiefly among the youngest voters.
Canada: Why do municipal electors not vote?, Canadian Journal of Urban Research (2006)
This paper examines through telephone surveys, the reasons why electors did not exercise their right to vote at the municipal level and Voter turnout in Canada has declined in the last several decades and is now among the lowest in the western world. When non-voters were asked why they did not vote, the most frequent reason was lack of information about candidates and the poor quality of the candidates. The person most likely to vote is a senior, upper income, born outside Canada, owning their own home, and politically and community involved. These results are not dissimilar to those in a recent survey of federal electors.
