Debacle for Prime Minister in first EU elections in Romania, Wien International (2007)

Parties close to President Trajan Basescu were the winners of the first elections to the European parliament in Romania at the end of November 2007. The National Liberal Party (PNL) of Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu suffered a crushing defeat. However, an electoral reform proposed by Mr Basescu failed to win voters' support in a referendum held simultaneously with the elections.
