2009 European Parliament Elections

The European Parliament of 2009 in Denmark was the election of the delegation from Denmark to the European Parliament, consisting of 13 seats (previously 14). All Danish parties that were represented in the European Parliament announced that they would take part in the election. Under the Danish electoral code for European Parliament elections, parties that surpassed the 2 percent threshold in the last Folketing election, may also take part in the European elections.

As in the last election, several electoral coallitions were agreed to before the vote. The only party not in a coalition was the Danish People's Party (Dansk Folkeparti). The Social Democrats gained the most votes with a result of 21.49 percent, resulting in four seats in the European Parliament. The Danish Liberal Party (Venstre) gained 20.24 percent with 3 seats. The Socialist People's Party (Socialistisk Folkeparti) and the Danish People's Party gained 2 seats each and Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) and People's Movement Against the EU (Folkebevægelsen mod EU) gained one seat each. Since the party June Movement failed to obtain a seat in the elections, both head of the movement Keld Albrechtsen and lead candidate Hanne Dahl announced that they intended to disband the movement.
