The President is elected N/A to serve a 5-year term. In the House of Assembly, 9 members are appointed to serve 3-year terms and 21 members are elected by popular vote to serve 5-year terms.

Politics of Dominica takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Dominica is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the House of Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

General elections were held in Dominica on May 5, 2005. Voter turnout was 59.09%. The Dominica Labour Party won 12 seats, the United Workers' Party 8, and an independent took 1 seat. The DLP formed a government with little change from the previous one. It was the first election since 1975 that the Dominica Freedom Party did not won a single seat. The DLP, with which it had been a coalition partner, gave the DFP at least one seat in the Senate.
