The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 4-year term. In National Congress (Congreso Nacional) 128 members are elected by direct vote to serve a 4-year term.

Elections 2009
On Sunday November 29, Hondurans
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal has begun the activities related to the elections that will take place on 2009. By the end of August 2007, the electoral schedule for primaries on 2008 was proposed to the five registered political parties, as well as the one corresponding to the general elections.
On November 30th, 2008 Hondurans voted at the primary elections of the following parties:
According to results published by the Tribunal Supremo Electoral, Mauricio Villeda was declared virtual winner with 56% of the votes cast, although only 11.34% had been counted at the time, to be the candidate of the Partido Liberal. He got more votes than the Parliament president, Roberto Micheletti, who obtained 26% of the preference of the voters.
The winner for the Partido Nacional, with 11.11% of the votes counted, was Porfirio Lobo, who got 78% of the votes cast, while Mario Canahuati only received 19%.
About 4.5 million Hondurans will have the possibility to cast their vote to choose between the candidates that, on the general elections of November 29th, will run for the following offices:

Felicito Ávila (Democracia Cristiana)
César Ham (Unificación Democrática)

A Presidential and General Election was held on November 27, 2005. Manuel Zelaya of the Liberal Party of Honduras (Partido Liberal de Honduras: PLH) won, with Porfirio Pepe Lobo of the National Party of Honduras (Partido Nacional de Honduras: PNH) coming in second. The PNH challenged the election results, and Lobo Sosa did not concede until December 7. Towards the end of December, the government finally released the total ballot count, giving Zelaya the official victory. Zelaya was inaugurated as Honduras' new president on January 27, 2006. His government has generally been considered fragile and he does not hold a majority in the National Congress.
