2009 Parliamentary Elections
Parliamentary elections were held on 8 February 2009. While polls and pundits predicted few changes, the national conservative party "Progressive Citizens' Party in Liechtenstein" (Fortschrittliche Bürgerpartei) lost many votes, as did the green social-liberal "Free List" (Freie Liste). Both parties lost between four and five percentage points of voter support, resulting in one lost seat in the Landstag (the parliament in Liechtenstein) for the Progressive Citizen's Party and two lost seats for the Free List.
The national liberal Patriotic Union (Vaterländische Union) won a lot of votes, and even gained a majority in the Landstag. Compared to the last election, they climbed approximately ten percentage points in voter support, resulting in three new seats in the Landstag. In total they won 47.61 percent of the national vote, the highest figure of the three parties. Total voter turnout was 84.63 percent.
