The President is elected by direct popular vote to serve a 5-year term. In the National Council of the Slovak Republic (Narodna Rada Slovenskej Republiky) 150 members are elected by proportional representation to serve 4-year terms.

Recent election


Presidential election - 21 March & 4 April, 2009

On 21 March was held the first round of Slovakian presidential election, the second round took place on 4 April, 2009. The president is elected directly for 5 years. In the second round the voters chose from two candidates, one was the present president Ivan Gasparovic, the other was Iveta Radicova. Ivan Gasparovic won the election with more than 55 per cent of the votes.
