The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term. In the People's Council (Majlis), 42 members are elected by popular vote to serve 5-year terms and 8 members are appointed by the president to serve 5-year terms.

Parliamentary elections were held in the Maldives on 22 January 2005. At the time no political parties were allowed (they were legalised on 2 July 2005), so all candidates were non-partisans. Those supporting President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom won a majority of the 48 seats.
