The by-elections will be held by a reconstituted EMB that will be hardly 6 months in office operating with a skeleton staff. The biggest challenge is to register voters who will participate in the by-election as well as conduct voter education in addition to managing the by-election

Briefing and Launching of Short Message Service System to Support and Strengthen the Electoral Processes
The Institute for Education in Democracy supported by Embassy of Finland will hold a launching of a Short Message Service System to Support and Strengthen the Electoral Processes to partners and stakeholders in Nairobi on 20th August 2009 at Sarova Panafric Hotel.
In order to enhance and improve the electoral process in Kenya, IED with support by DANIDA has developed an SMS system that will be used to among other things, transmit the provisional statistical elections results from all the polling stations around the country to a central data processing centre and thus enable IED to provide Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT).
The SMS system will also support the civic engagement through interaction with citizens by disseminating voter education messages; support research though conducting opinion polls and strengthen interaction with citizen though receiving feedback from the public.
Recent
Advocacy and Planning Workshop for the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC)
The Institute for Education in Democracy supported by AUSAID and USAID through its partner Pact Kenya, hosted a 4 day workshop (June 2nd to 5th 2009) to assist the IIEC to begin the planning workshop that had three broad objectives:
1: To create awareness and interest on the different aspects of electoral administration.
2: Support IIEC in planning and prioritization its tasks for the next 3,6,12 months.
3: Advocate for the prioritization of electoral reform in Kenya.
Ace Presentation
The Institute for Education in Democracy supported by International IDEA held a briefing and presentation of the ACE Electoral Knowledge Network to partners and stakeholders in Nairobi on 30th April 2008 at Grand Regency hotel. The briefing brought together the organisation representatives from international organisations local Non-Governmental Organisations, Civil society organisations and the Local media. In total 14 organizations and 10 media houses were represented in the 2 hour session.
Conference: 2007 Elections Campaigns in Kenya
A conference was held November 2007 in Nairobi to promote National Dialogue on Issue Based Campaigns and share experiences to recommend policies that can be implemented now and in future entitled "Promoting Issue Based Campaigns". The conference was organized and co-hosted the by Institute for Education in Democracy (IED) and Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD). Click here to read the report
