17th Conference of the ACEEEO -
11-13 September, 2008

The ACEEEO and the Permanent Electoral Authority of Romania, jointly organized the 17th ACEEEO annual conference, in Constanta (Romania) from 11 to 13 September 2008.

This year the agenda provided an opportunity to exchange experiences on and the international comparison of issues related to Role of the law enforcement bodies (police) in the security of the elections and Ensuring security and accuracy of voting materials.

This professional meeting provided an opportunity for electoral experts to exchange experiences with their colleagues from all around the world. The conference featured professional development workshops, panels of election experts, an exhibition of electoral equipment and services.

Capacity Building Training for Moldovan Election Officials - 14-18 July, 2008

The ACEEEO Secretariat organized a training for the members of the Central Election Commission of Moldova in order to build sustainable institutional technical capacity and skills to administer elections and referenda. The training focused on organizational and technical skills necessary for administering elections and referenda, planning and assuring human resources for elections, conflict management and handling legal complaints. Training agenda was finalized during a preparatory meeting to be held at the ACEEEO Secretariat, Budapest, on April 21-22. Romania | parliamentary
28 November

The Romanian legislative elections of 2008 will be held on 28 November. 137 members of the Senate and 332 members of the Chamber of Deputies are elected through party-list proportional representation system for a 4-year term. Czech Republic| regional & senate elections

 

17-18 October, 24-25 October (Second round of Senate elections)

Regional elections and the first round of elections to the upper house of parliament were held in October 2008. Established in 1996, the Senate has 81 members elected for a six year term. Elections to one third of the Senate are held every two years: this time 27 seats were allocated among the winners. In the elections to one-third of the Senate, the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) won, gaining 23 of 27 posts, while the senior government Civic Democrats (ODS) gained only three and lost their absolute majority in the Senate. Lithuania| parliamentary

12 October

Bosnia & Herzegovina | local

5 October

More than three million Bosnian citizens were registered to vote for city councils and mayors at the fourth post-war local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ballot passed without major incidents and the average turnout was a better-than-expected 55 percent. Belarus | parliamentary
28 September, 2008

Parliamentary elections for the 110 members to the House of Representatives were held on 28 September, 2008. During the advance voting on September 23-26 more than a quarter of registered voters cast their ballots. Slovenia| parliamentary
21 September, 2008

Romania | local

June 1, 2008 and June 15, 2008
