Description of Electoral system

FKG.gifThere are no elections for the executive branch in the Falkland Islands. The head of the State is a Governor General appointed by the British Monarch. The country doesn´t have a President and the National Legislature consist in one chamber. The electoral system for that one chamber of the national elections is a list with proportional representation. The status of the electoral law governing national elections is part of the Constitution, Separate Legislation and Regulations or administrative rules.

 

The Falkland Islands elects a legislature on territorial level. The Legislative Assembly has 10 members, 8 of which are elected every 4 years and 2 members ex officio.

The vote in voluntary and the suffrage is universal, with the minimum voting requirement is to be 18 years old. The citinzenship is the other  qualilification than exist for the registering to the vote and voting in the national election. Also, the authority responsible for the registration of voters is the Central Goverment Department. It is facultative to be in that register.  The electors can vote at a specified polling station in the locality where they are registered at national elections, at specially designated polling stations and by proxy. Members of the armed forces can vote from outside the country by proxy or mail. Electors cast their votes by marking manually the ballot. The legal qualification to become a candidate at legislative election is age, citizenship and registration. Also, the votes first sorted and counted at special counting centers.   


The Electoral Managment is directly by the Justice Departmen also have the responsability for elections at National Level. For other hand, the expeditures of the national electoral managment body are controlled by the legislature.

In boundary for the elections are not applicable the delimited constituencies. Also, the EMB conducts voter  education  and  information campaigns  at the national elections in the election time only.
