Martinique elects on regional/departemental level a legislature. The legislature consists out of two councils with diverging powers. The Regional Council (Conseil régional) has 41 members, elected for a four year term by proportional representation. The General Council (Conseil général) has members elected for a six year term in single seat-constituencies.

Martinique is not a separate territory but both an overseas region and overseas department of France, with the same government institutions as areas on the French mainland. The administrative centre is Fort-de-France. The Prefect of Martinique is Yves Dassonville (since 2004).
