The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term. In the Assembly (Mejlis) 50 members are elected by popular vote to serve 5-year terms. The People's Council (Halk Maslahat) have 2507 members. Members of the Peoples Council are elected either by popular vote or appointed.

DID YOU KNOW? Turkmenistan is a single-party state. The only political party that forms government and is permitted to run candidates for elections is "Democratic Party of Turkmenistan".
Parliamentary elections to the People's Council (Halk Maslahat) were held in Turkmenistan on 9 December 2007. The election was only for a part of the members of the People's Council, and all of the candidates were of the ruling Democratic Party of Turkmenistan.
