Georgia, Final Report on the 21 May 2008 parliamentary elections, OSCE/ODIHR (2008)
Final report of OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission on the 21 May 2008 parliamentary elections in Georgia. International Election Obsevation Mission concluded that “overall, these elections clearly offered an opportunity for the Georgian people to choose their representatives from amongst a wide array of choices. The authorities and other political stakeholders made efforts to conduct these elections in line with OSCE and Council of Europe commitments.” However, the IEOM “identified a number of problems which made this implementation uneven and incomplete.”

We shall have a look at the Council of Europe’s observation of the Parliamentary elections in Georgia (21 May 2008) and the corresponding OSCE – ODIHR election mission statement of preliminary findings and conclusions. We will in no way make a summary of the two or try to pit one against the other. Both approaches are different and so be it. We will be technical, practical and professional.

Political analyst Marat Kazakbaev told RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service that the system will work to see Bakiev reelected. But he said that Almaz Atambaev, the candidate of the unified opposition who heads the Social Democratic Party (SDP), could provide stiff competition for the incumbent. Kyrgyzstan's Central Election Commission has registered the only female applicant bidding to compete in July's presidential election. Toktaiym Umetalieva, the 49-year-old chairwoman of the Association of Nongovernmental and Nonprofit Organizations, was the country's first-ever female candidate for president when she ran against eventual winner Kurmanbek Bakiev in 2005.
