Following the Elections Amendment Act No 58 of 2009, every year the EC calls for applications of new political parties that wish to register (the last call for application was in May 2010). According to some of the requirements, political parties should have engaged in politics and they should maintain audited accounts, but none of the 54 parties did so. These rejected parties will be able to re-apply next year.
