Delimitation of constituencies


Question:Are constituencies delimited for election purposes?
Answer: a. Yes
Comments: For the purpose of elections to the House of Representatives or to a local authority, Zanzibar shall be divided into electoral constituencies and every constituency shall elect one person to be member of the House of Representatives. The number of electoral constituencies may not be lower than 40 and higher than 55. For Presidential elections, the whole country territory forms one constituency.

Criteria for drawing boundaries


Question:On what criteria are the boundaries drawn?

Comments: All constituencies shall as far as possible have an equal number of residents. In addition, the Electoral Commission shall take into consideration: 1) the size of the population particularly ensuring appropriate representation in urban areas and towns in rural areas thinly populated; 2) population growth; 3) the means of communication; 4) administrative demarcations and the number of inhabitants in any part of Zanzibar.
