The Head of State is also the head of government, elected by universal, direct suffrage for a renewable term of seven years. The president is elected by absolute majority of votes cast. If s/he does not obtain the required amount of votes in the first round, the second round takes place 21 days after the first round. Only the two candidates who have received the highest number of votes in the first round contest in the second round.

137 members of the National Assembly are directly elected in general election by FPTP in two rounds. The candidate who obtains an absolute majority of votes cast shall be declared elected in the first round. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes cast is declared elected in the second round. Deputies are elected to 5-year terms and are eligible for reelection.
