The 19 May 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections, have so far been conducted in an environment in which fundamental freedoms and rights of assembly, expression and movement have been generally respected. The people of Malawi turned out to cast their ballots in high numbers demonstrating an awareness and commitment to an election which represents a step forward towards the consolidation of democracy.

General elections were held on 19 May 2009 for voters to elect a president, who is elected as Head of State and 193 parliamentary members elected for a five year term in single seat constituencies. The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) was present in Malawi from 7 April to 13 June 2009 following invitations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Electoral Commission.
