Description of Electoral System:

The President is elected by direct vote to serve a 5-year term. In the House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat), 550 members are elected to serve 5-year terms via an open list proportional representation system. In the Regional Representatives Council (Dewan Perwakilan Daerah, DPD), 168 candidates are elected using a Single Non Transferable Vote (SNTV). Each province required to elect four representatives to the DPD.

Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on Monday July 5, and Monday September 20, 2004. In the second round former security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono defeated incumbent President Megawati Sukarnoputri. Yudhoyono was inaugurated on October 20.

These were the first direct presidential elections in the history of Indonesia. Previously the President of Indonesia had been elected indirectly, by the legislature.
