The President is elected by parliament to serve a 7-year term. In the Knesset 120 members are elected by popular vote to serve 4-year terms.

Politics of Israel takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Israel is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in the the Knesset. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The political system of the State of Israel and its main principles are set out in 11 Basic Laws.
