The Chief is elected by parliament to serve a 5-year term. In the Legislative Assembly (Fono), 47 members are elected from village-based electorates to serve 5-year terms and 2 members are elected by independent voters with no village affiliation to serve 5-year terms.

General elections were held in Samoa on 31 March 2006. The result was a landslide victory for the Human Rights Protection Party, who took 30 of the 49 seats, and gained another five seats when independent MPs joined the party.
