Description of Electoral System:

The President is elected by direct vote to serve a 5-year term. In the House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat), 560 members are elected to serve 5-year terms via an open list proportional representation system. In the Regional Representatives Council (Dewan Perwakilan Daerah, DPD), 132 candidates are elected using a Single Non Transferable Vote (SNTV). Each province required to elect four representatives to the DPD.

Presidential Election

July 8, 2009

On July 8 2009, presidential elections were held in Indonesia to elect the president and vice president for 2009–2014 period. The candidates for president and vice president are Megawati-Prabowo, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boediono, and Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto.

The presidential election campaign began from June 2 to July 4 2009. The official election result is announced by the General Election Commission. The final results show incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won with 60.8% of the national vote, while the former president Megawati Sukarnoputri received 26.79% of the votes and vice president Yusuf Kalla received 12.41% of the vote.

Legislative Election

April 9, 2009

The election was held in Indonesia on April 9, 2009. The Electoral Management Body, Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU) announced thirty four (34) political parties participate in the 2009 legislative election.
