The NEC chairman, Judge Lewis Makame, said the decision was not a result of pressure from the government as many people have been claiming. However, the announcement should not come as a surprise following the recent proclamation by Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda that the government was thinking of extending it. Apparently, many Dar es Salaam residents had missed the opportunity to register. Yesterday Judge Makame said the NEC had extended the registration by two days “to enable all qualified people to register in the permanent register.” He said the registration would be on May 22 and 23 this year.
