U.S. institutes: Ukraine's new election law step backwards for democracy (Kyiv Post, 2010)
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) offices in Ukraine have recently joined forces for the first time to draw attention to concerns we share about the new Law on Local Elections. Both institutes, which have promoted democracy in Ukraine since 1992, have serious concerns about aspects of the law and the manner in which it was adopted.

Haiti: Wyclef Jean says he'll challenge election ruling, The New York Times (2010)
This article reports on the political situation in Haiti. Wyclef Jean announced that his lawyers will challenge the electoral commission's decision to reject his candidacy. The list of qualified candidates was released on Friday, and Mr Jean initially accepted the decision. On Sunday, however, he announced on Twitter the decision to appeal. An election official replied that there is no legal mechanism to contest the eligibility decision.

This article reports on the latest opinion poll in Brazil. Dilma Rousseff, candidate for the ruling Workers' Party, is leading the electoral race with a great advantage (17 percentage points) over her opponent, Jose Serra. Presidential elections will be held on October 3rd, and if the opinion polls are correct there will be only one round, as Ms Rousseff would gain about 54% of the votes.
