Nicolas Garrigue

Nicolas Garrigue is French and holds a MSc. in Rural Development Studies from Montpellier University (France). He has been involved early on in his career with socioeconomic research on traditional societies in Haiti, Burma, Egypt and South Sudan. Nowadays, his main area of work – and interest – is democracy at the local level. Nicolas worked for the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) from 1999 to 2002, where he was confronted with the daunting task of rebuilding a local administration which had been totally erased after the departure of the Indonesian occupant. Since 2002, Nicolas has worked mostly in the Middle East (Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, Iran) on local governance & electoral issues. Nicolas collaborates regularly with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) on local democracy and electoral projects. Nicolas has worked for the FAO, the European Union, ICARDA, CARE International, MSF, UN, UNDP, IDEA, IOM and the World Bank Institute. He is currently working as Senior Governance and Socio-economic Development Program Officer in Amman for UNOPS-Iraq Operations Centre.
