Member of an Electoral Management Body/Election Commission

Robert Sampson

I am a Canadian lawyer trained in English and in French, in common law and civil law at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. While I began my career as a litigation associate at a large New York law firm, I have worked for the Canadian government for the last five years, first at the Department of Justice, then the Federal Court of Appeal and now Elections Canada. At Elections Canada, I am responsible for litigation before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, specifically with respect to matters related to disability and the accessibility of the voting process. I also advise with respect to proposed amendments to electoral legislation and have supported the Agency as it implemented change in areas such as voter registration, the training of electoral workers and the voting process. I have a particular interest in the potential uses of electoral technology in enhancing the accessibility of the voting process. I have a broad interest in democratic governance and the rule of law, including legislative drafting and the legislative process, administrative law and the role of the courts in reviewing government decision-making.
