Ecuador: Preliminary Statement, Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, EU, (26 April, 2009)

These elections were the first under the 2008 Constitution. They signified the end of an intense electoral succession of elections and referendum since late 2006. The elections took place in a peaceful manner with local exceptions. Freedoms of expression and assembly were generally respected. However during the campaign period, the media did not provide the same level playing field.
