Description of Electoral System

 The Netherlands Antilles elect a legislature. The Estates (Staten) have 22 members, elected for a four year term in three multi-seat constuencies and 2 single-seat constituencies. Executive power rests with a governor, and a prime minister heads an eight-member Cabinet. The governor is appointed for a six-year term by the monarch, and the prime minister and deputy prime minister are elected by the Staten for four-year terms.

 

In elections held on 27 Jan. 2006 the Party for the Restructured Antilles (PAR) won 5 seats, the New Antilles Movement 3, the National Alliance 2, the Bonaire Patriotic Union 2, the Party Workers’ Liberation Front 30th May 2, National People’s Party 2, Forsa Kòrsou 2, with 1 seat each going to four other parties.
