The President is elected by parliament to serve a 4-year term. In the Parliament (Nitijela) 33 members are elected by popular vote to serve 4-year terms.

Litokwa Tomeing was elected by parliament on 7 Jan. 2008, defeating incumbent Kessai Note. At the House of Assembly elections on 19 Nov. 2007 the United People’s Party won 15 of 33 seats, President Note’s United Democratic Party 14 and independents 4.
