 Description of Electoral System

(courtesy of IFES election guide)

The President is elected by direct vote and serves a 5-year term. The candidate must obtain 50% of the votes, and if no candidate obtains the majority, a run-off election must be held between the two major candidates. The President, who is also the Head of Government, cannot be elected for more than two terms. In the People's Council (Majlis), 77 members are elected by plurality vote in multi-member constituencies. The People's Council is dissolved and renovated every 5 years.
