The article reports that: "Qataris are heading to the polls to choose municipal council representatives in elections seen as a small step towards greater representative democracy in the Gulf state." Of its 1.7 million population, approximately 34,000 people are eligible to vote in the coming election. There are to be 117 candidates, four of which are women. Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jasem Al Thani has said that future Doha legislative polls are also a possibility.
