The 2000 election ‘results’ were perhaps the most tragic, with a score of protestors killed in Pemba by security forces in January 2001. Thousands more fled the country, reducing Tanzania to an exporter of refugees for the first time! There’ve been attempts to reconcile the disputants through Muafaka Talks, dialogue, between CCM and the Civic United Front (CUF), the two major parties in Zanzibar. Unfortunately, these haven’t worked, and major differences generously laced with mutual mistrust remain entrenched deeper than ever.
