Elections-related violence
Elections are indispensable instrument for functioning democracy. However, in some societies, and in particular in conflict prone societies, elections may hold great potential for triggering election-related violence. Consequences of such outcomes may include grave implications for human rights, economies and inherent distrust in the credibility of democracy. Election-related violence causes human deaths and suffering; it destroys infrastructure and harms local economies; creating disbelief in capacity of democratic processes to facilitate democratic change Despite the fact that election-related violence is not a new phenomenon and that significant efforts are being invested in understanding and preventing violent outcomes, Kenya, Pakistan and Moldova are strong reminders of fragility of electoral processes. In many countries, such as Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and elsewhere, election violence seems to have become an integral part of election folklore.
