Nigeria: BBC Q&A on 2007 presidential election
Nigerians go to the polls on Saturday to elect a new president a week after voting in a parliament election marred by violence and allegations of fraud.
This is the first time since independence in 1960 that power is being transferred from one civilian president to another in Africa's most populous nation.
Opposition parties and observer groups have called for the vote to be postponed. The opposition threatened a boycott unless the electoral commission is disbanded and other conditions to ensure transparency are met. However, they resolved at the last minute to participate but to continue fighting in the courts.

Nigeria: Pre-Election Assessment Report, State and Federal Elections, IRI (2007)
This is the report of a pre-election assessment delegation planned by the International Republican Institute (IRI). This delegation's goal was to observe the preparation of the general elections to be held in 2007. The delegation found some important shortcoming in the logistics of the elections, such as the voter registration procedures, voter information, and the role of the media. Security was also a major concern in the 2007 elections, and its implications could greatly influcence the results. Finally, IRI makes some final recommendations to the authorities, the Indipendent National Election Commission, and the traditional leaders.

This is a report by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) on the 2007 elections in Nigeria. This report illustrates the shortcomings and the issues that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to address in the years before the elections. The NDI is very critical of the commission’s work, admitting that the irregularities and incidents observed compromised the whole process. The NDI recommends civic and political leaders to work together to address the many failures of this electoral process.
