Description of Electoral System

BMG.gifThe monarchy is hereditary. In the Senate 11 members are appointed to serve 5-year terms. In the House of Assembly 36 members are elected by popular vote to serve 5-year terms. Members of the Senate are appointed by the governor, the premier and members of the opposition parties. During the 1998 elections, the House of Assembly consisted of 40 seats.

A general election was held in Bermuda on December 18, 2007. The Progressive Labour Party (PLP) won a third term in power with 22 seats, against 14 for the opposition United Bermuda Party. Both parties won the same number of seats that they won in the previous election in 2003.
