The Republic of Macedonia elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. The president is elected for a five year term by the people. The Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia (Sobranie) has 120 members, elected for a four year term, by proportional representation.

Politics of the Republic of Macedonia occurs within the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
Most recent & Upcoming Elections
The first round of Presidential and municipal elections were held in the Republic of Macedonia on 22 March 2009. The first-round of the presidential elections have ended peacefully, with partial results indicating the governing party's candidate, Gjorgje Ivanov is ahead. The second round is to be held on April 5.
Since the 1 June 2008 early parliamentary elections many steps have been taken to improve the electoral framework and prepare for recent election, such as the creation of an Action Plan for Elections, amendments to the Electoral Code, an amendment to the Constitution, and continued efforts to hold those responsible for frauds accountable before a court. Past Elections
Pre-term parliamentary elections in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were held on June, 1 2008. 63 mandates were won by the VMRO-DPMNE coalition, 27 by the Sun coalition, 18 by the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), 11 by the Democratic Party of the Albanians (DPA) and 1 by the Party for European Future (PEI). The government coalition was formed by the VMRO-DPMNE coalition, with DUI and PEI. The voter turnout of all the election phases was 57,06%. For more detailed election results please click here.
According to the report of the OSCE-ODIHR Election observation mission, in most of the country the elections were procedurally well administered. However, violent acts were reported in predominantly ethnic Albanian areas. Following a thorough review of complaints by the State Election Commission, repeat elections were held in 187 polling stations on 15 June, and furthermore in 15 polling stations on 29 June. This allowed those voters affected by serious irregularities on 1 June to express their will in a more secure and generally calmer environment.
The elections to the Assembley of the Republic of Macedonia were held on 5 July, 2006. The 120 deputies are elected by a regional proportional system without a threshold requirement. There are six electoral districts in Macedonia and 20 deputies are elected in each electoral district. Following the tragic death of the former President, Boris Trajkovski, in an airplane crash on 26 February 2004 an early Presidential election took place on 14 and 28 April, 2006. The election for presidency was held according to Two Round System. To be elected in the first round, the winning candidate must receive the votes of a majority of the total number of registered voters. If no candidate secures an election victory, a second round is held in two weeks between the two candidates who obtained the most votes. The candidate who obtains the most votes in the second round is elected, but only if a majority of registered voters cast votes.
