Description of Electoral System

The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 4-year term. The Governor is elected by popular vote to serve a 4-year term. In the Senate 29 members are elected by popular vote to serve 4-year terms. In the House of Representatives 51 members are elected by popular vote to serve 4-year terms.
General Elections 2008
November 4
On Tuesday, November 4 the voter roll consisted of 2.458,036 million voters. They cast their votes to choose Governor, Resident Commissioner, congressmen, senators and majors.
1,782 polling tables were installed around the 110 electoral precincts in the island, to receive no more than 500 voters.
With the preliminary tally of 1'856,157 de votes, the chosen Governor was Luis Fortuño, with 52.70% of the votes cast.

DEMOCRATS' PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY 2008
This election took place for the first time in Puerto Rico's history since it became part of the commonwealth, on June 1st.
Since the 2'366,674 registered voters as of May 2nd are not divided by political party, all of them could cast their vote to decide who would get the 55 delegates that were stake.
The overall cost for this election was stated to be of $2.5 million dollars, for an expected turnout of 25% at most.

PRIMARIES 2008
These elections took place on March 9th. 'Primaries' is a preliminary election in which the registered voters of a political party nominate candidates for office.
