Description of Electoral System:

The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term.  The  Assembly (Mejlis) is composed of 125 members elected by absolute majority vote in single-member constituencies to serve 5-year terms.  Following Constitutional amendments of 26 September 2008, the People's Council (Halk Maslakhaty) was abolished.  The People's Council had 2507 members, which were under major influence of the President of the Republic.  The number of elected MPs in Mejlis was increased from 50 to 125.
