Description of Electoral System

The president is elected by the National Assembly to serve a 6-year term. In the National Assembly (Majlis Alnuwab) 128 members are elected by popular vote on the basis of sectarian proportion to serve 4-year terms
 

 

Parliamentary elections 2009

 

Parliamentary elections were held in Lebanon on 7 June 2009.

Preliminary results indicated that the turnout had been as high as 55%. The March 14 Alliance garnered 71 seats in the 128-member parliament, while the March 8 Alliance won 57 seats. This result is virtually the same as the result from the election in 2005. Read more 

Parliamentary elections 2005

The 2005 Lebanese General Elections were the first elections in thirty years without a Syrian military or intelligence presence in Lebanon. The Lebanese elected 128 MPs, with equal representation for Christians and Muslims. These elections were the first in Lebanese history to be won outright by a single electoral block and were also the first to be monitored by the United Nations

(United Nations, October 26, 2005 S/2005/673).
