Description of Electoral System:

The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term. In the National Assembly (Azgayin Zhoghov) 131 members are elected by popular vote to serve 4-year terms. 90 members elected by party list, 41 by direct vote.

Past elections

The Elections to the National Assembley were held on 12 May, 2007. 131 deputies were elected for a four-year term of office: 90 seats were allocated by proportional party-list system and 41 seats by majoritarian system. The Republican Party of Armenia won 33,91 % of the votes, followed by the Prosperous Armenia (15,13%) and Armenian Revolutionary Federation (13,16%). The Rule of Law (7,05) and the Heritage (6,00%) parties had also passed the 5 percent electoral threshold necessary to win a seat in Azgayin Zhoghov. The new President was elected through a plurality formula (two round system). Armenian Prime Minister, Serzh Sargsyan was elected as the President of Armenia in the first round which was held on 19 February, 2008. Former President, Robert Kocharian was not entitled to come forward as a candidate for the third time. For more information about candidates click here.

The time frames for election activities set by the Central Election Commission of Armenia are as follows:

• Nomination of candidates: 21 Nov 2007-6 Dec 2007
• Registration of candidates: 31 Dec 2007-20 Jan 2008
• Pre-election campaign: 21 Jan 2008-17 Feb 2008 (24:00)
• Voter lists will be printed and posted in precinct centers and on CEC website: 10 Jan 2008
• Final voter lists posted in precict centers: 17 Feb 2008
• Election precincts will be determined: by 5 Jan 2008
• Precinct electoral commissions (PEC) will be formed: 31 Jan 2008-3 Feb 2008
• Voting: 19 Feb 2007, 08:00-20:00
• Precinct election results publicized: by 20 Feb 2008, 06:00
• Preliminary election results announced: by 20 Feb 2007
• Final Election results announced by: 26 Feb 2007.
