Description of Electoral System:(courtesy of IFES election guide) The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term. Country overviewSerbia became a stand-alone sovereign republic in summer 2006 after Montenegro voted in a referendum for independence from the Union of Serbia and Montenegro. When the vote was followed by a formal declaration of independence by Montenegro, a special session of parliament in Belgrade declared Serbia to be the legal successor to the now defunct union of Serbia and Montenegro. Recent electionsPresidential elections - 2008 First round of the Serbia presidential elections was held on 20 January, two weeks later (3 February) the second round was successfully conducted. Parliamentary elections - 2008 According to preliminary results the pro-Western alliance led by President Boris Tadic won Sunday's parliamentary elections - 11 May 2008. According to projected election results reported by an independent monitoring group, the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy, Mr Tadic's Democratic Party and its allies gained 38.7 percent of the votes and secured 103 out of 250 seats in the country's parliament - not enough to form a coalition on his own. Details are here. For preliminary results, please click here and for voterturnout here. Past electionsParliamentary elections - 2007 Parliamentary elections were held in Serbia on 21st January 2007. The elections were victorious for Serbian Radical Party (SRS), led by Vojislav Seselj. In the National Assembly, 250 members are elected through a party-list proportional representation system to serve 4-year terms. Registering parties had to surpass the 5% threshold to gain seats in the parliament. Parties registering as ethnic minority parties needed to pass a natural threshold at 0.4% 6,652,105 voters were eligible to vote. There were 8,441 ballot stations, 58 of which were abroad. Turnout reached the level of 60.62%. The first session of the new National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia was held on 14 February 2007. Main parties in the electoral race:
