Women’s political participation and gender equality in elections can be promoted through both international commitments and domestic legal provisions. International human rights instruments contain commitments and obligations adopted by the States to promote women’s participation in elections. Domestic legal frameworks, including constitutions, electoral laws and relevant legislation, EMB’s regulations and codes of conduct, also affect greatly women’s electoral participation and political representation.
