There is a wide variety of electoral systems around the world, which respond to different needs in terms of historical relevance, representation, governance and stability. All electoral systems have their own value, and each of them has advantages and disadvantages in terms of representation and governability, as well as concrete implications regarding the election of women. Although all electoral systems can contribute to the functioning of democracy, they are not gender neutral, since they have a great impact on women’s political representation.
