Amina Rasul BernardoMS AMINA RASUL-BERNARDO is the Lead Convenor and founder of the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy (www.pcid.org.ph) and a trustee of the Magbassa Kita Foundation, Inc. She is on the Executive Council of the National Movement for Free elections (NAMFREL). PCID is part of the Executive Council of the Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE). PCID has also worked closely with the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), bringing the Muslim religious (Ulama) to help in advocacy and monitoring. Ms Rasul is responsible for the development of an Islamic peace education model for the Philippines ( available in book form) which has a chapter on democratic elections. Shehas written and edited several books on the Mindanao conflict, Islam and democracy. She is a columnist with the Manila Times. She has lectured at Harvard, Yale, Georgetown University, University of Michigan, Notre Dame University, Australian National University, Nanyang Technological University and many others. Under her leadership, the PCID has successfully helped organize a national network of Muslim religious organizations, known as the National Ulama Conference of the Philippines (NUCP) with over 150 organizations as members. The major Muslim religious organizations are with NUCP. PCID is now working with the Muslim women religious leaders to establish their own network, to be known as Noor-us Salam. She was a member of the Philippine Cabinet under former President Fidel V. Ramos, as Presidential Advisor on Youth Affairs, appointed concurrently as the first Chair of the National Youth Commission (NYC), which she organized. Ms Rasul was appointed by the late President Corazon C. Aquino as Commissioner of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women representing Muslims (1990 to 1998). She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Philippine National Oil Corporation, the Development Bank of the Philippines and Founding Director of the Local Government Guarantee Corporation. She was a Visiting Professor at the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, Manila where she developed an interactive module to teach Peace and Conflict Studies. She earned a master's degree in business management from the Asian Institute of Management and a Master of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She has served as a resource person for CNN, Al-Jazeera, BBC, C-Span, Australian National Radio as well as Philippine media. |
