Mark Borg

Mark Borg hails from Malta and has been based in Fiji since 1995. He studied education, environment education, politics and governance. In Malta, he worked as a teacher, later a journalist, and was also founding member of Alternattiva Demokratika, the Maltese Green Party. He contested both national and local elections in Malta and was the Environment Spokesperson for the party. In 1994 he participated in the UN’s Observation Mission in South Africa’s first democratic elections. A year later he went to Fiji working as Information and Communications Officer on a UNDP Pacific regional project for equitable and sustainable development. He then joined UNDP’s multi-country office focusing on the development of information and communication technology (ICT) in the Pacific, as well as assisting the UN Resident Coordinator’s role. He then joined UNDP’s Pacific Sub-regional Resource Facility (SURF) focusing on the organisation’s capacity building and networking. In 2001 he became a free-lance consultant in Governance and ICT development. He assisted in the 2001 and 2006 elections in Fiji and contributed towards the setting up of the media centre for the 2007 elections in Papua New Guinea. In 2003 he was in Mongolia serving as the International Advisor of the International Conference of New or Restored Democracies (ICNRD), and was responsible for the drafting and negotiation of the Ulaanbaatar Declaration and Plan of Action. In 2005 he worked in South Africa on an EU Project aimed at strengthening local government in two of South Africa’s provinces – Mpumalanga and Limpopo. In 2006 he joined the University of the South Pacific as a Fellow in E-Governance and he assisted with the development of the Pacific Islands Governance Portal and the Pacific Peace Net. Mark Borg joined the Fiji National Initiative on Civic Education in November 2007 as Project Manager, a post he held until June 2010. He is currently a free-lance consultant focusing on Governance, Democracy and Electoral Support. As a consultant Mark has worked for UNICEF, UNFPA, UNOCHA, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the BRIDGE Project, the Pacific Islands Association of NGOs, Women Action for Change, WWF and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
