There is a wide variety
of electoral systems around the world, which respond to different needs in
terms of historical relevance, representation, governance and stability. All
electoral systems have their own value, and each of them has advantages and
disadvantages in terms of representation and governability, as well as concrete
implications regarding the election of women. Although all electoral systems
can contribute to the functioning of democracy, they are not gender neutral,
since they have a great impact on women’s political representation.
