Computers and other items of technology are generally sensitive to their physical environment and generally have special needs. These include:
- Air conditioning - computer equipment generally needs steady, mild temperatures
- Level floors and tables - computer equipment generally performs best on level, stable floors and tables
- Ergonomic furniture - staff using computer equipment need ergonomic tables, chairs and accessories to minimise the incidence of workplace injuries
- Dust minimisation - dust is very harmful to the operation of computer equipment - regular cleaning of rooms to remove dust and dirt is essential - in some cases special air filtering equipment is needed to remove all traces of dust from the local environment
- Humidity control - humidity can also be harmful to computer equipment - very wet and very dry environments can cause problems, particularly rust of metal components
- Fire prevention - by its electrical nature, computer equipment is susceptible to fire - fire detection alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers and fire management plans need to be in place
