Telecommunications technology is an essential part of running a modern election. The telephone has for many years been a key method of communication in election administration. More recently, other electoral telecommunication uses have been found for telephone lines, including faxes, telexes, video conferences and data transmission.
The means by which telecommunications have been transmitted have also progressed from wires strung on poles. While this method is still widely used, other means of transmission are now common, including fibre-optic cables, and microwave and radio signals sent by satellite and ground-based transmitters.
